Go to Sleep, Little Dwarfling

03.23.2011

Dear Dwarfling,

You are incredibly adorable when you sleep.  The way you can seem to get comfortable in any position, no matter how uncomfortable that it may look to someone who has never mastered the cat-like ability to sleep while upside-down.

You make all sorts of funny faces when you sleep, and do this weird eyes-rolling-into-the-back-of-your-head thing that is incredibly cute at the same time as being completely disturbing.

You snore.  You whimper.  You flail your arms.  I’d love to know what you’re dreaming, but given your experiences to this point, it probably has something to do with boobs.

I wish you would sleep more often.

And I wish it wasn’t required that I hold you while you do it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love you and I love holding you.  But damn, girl, it’s hard to do everything one-handed.  I’m coping well enough with eating and drinking.  Typing or playing on the computer is really hard.  Trying to take apart a computer or do any other chores is utterly impossible.

Also, what’s with not letting me sit down while holding you?  It seems that you need to be in motion all the time, and even sitting and rocking in a chair isn’t good enough, no, you need to be moving.  Do you have some pressing appointment or somewhere you need to be?

You were so great in the first while, but now that you’ve been around for five weeks a crib just doesn’t cut it anymore for you.  No, it’s much nicer in Daddy’s arms, isn’t it?

Daddy and Mommy are very tired, Teagan, darling.

Go to sleep.  We’ll be here when you wake up.

Love,

Daddy.

The Dwarfling, passed out in my arms.

  1. hehe, yeah I remember those days. At least I was allowed to sit down while he was sleeping

  3. I hear ya. Our Spawn was the same way for a long time, until he finally realized that it was okay to sleep.

We’re a bit spoiled. He’s slept through the night since he was about 2-3 months old, and is very good at napping. A normal night for him is to sleep at least 12 hours. I worry about our next child…

    • I can give you some hope on the next child thing. Both of ours have been good sleepers once they settled down after the first 3 months.

once past that stage they were sleeping 10 hours or so a night most nights (the odd exception for teething and colds etc)

  4. D’awwww :3

  5. Count yourself lucky, though, my little brother had colic (sp?) until he was two. He would sleep for 15 minutes then cry for 2 hours.

I was 4 at the time, so I don’t remember it at all :D

  6. Honestly, don’t do it do not walk holding your child to get them to sleep.

Let her scream a little in her cot teach her, that screaming won’t get rewarded, I know its difficult.

Otherwise you will be making a rod for your own back. I am speaking as a parent of two lovely teenage boys. First child you wrap in cotton wool, second you will let juggle household utensils.

Bottom line is you need to get her into a routine which your thinking!! what in the first 5 weeks?

    • I think the Dr Harvey Karp way is a happy medium. Rock them to sleep if neccesary but just gently jostle them awake as you put them down so they’re relaxed but still have to settle themselves back to sleep!

In the end do what works and feels right for you :)
